Ginkgo

Botanical Name: Ginkgo biloba
Common Names: Ginkgo, Maidenhair Tree
Part Used: Leaf

Ginkgo is one of the world’s oldest living trees, having survived for more than 200 million years. Ginkgo trees were revered by the Chinese and planted around their temples, a practice that may have helped ensure its survival.

The leaves of the Ginkgo tree were first shown to have beneficial effects on circulation by German scientists in the 1960’s, and a patent for a highly concentrated extract, standardised for flavonoid content, was issued. Since that time Ginkgo extract has become one of the most thoroughly researched agents in herbal medicine.

Conditions Ginkgo is used to treat include cerebral insufficiency (impaired or insufficient blood flow to the brain) and mild to moderate Alzheimer’s disease. These conditions are usually associated with aging, thus Ginkgo is considered a primary herb for promoting a healthy aging process. Ginkgo has also been shown to be effective in improving memory and attention in healthy young people, even when taken for short term use.

The  Ginkgo story...

Ginkgo is one of the most popular health products in the world today, however most of this is consumed in the form of a highly processed commercial extract, concentrated to a high percentage of flavonoids (one of the therapeutic components of Ginkgo). However calling such a product Ginkgo, when it is so far removed from its natural state, can be misleading.

Kiwiherb Ginkgo extract is prepared in a traditional method from locally grown Ginkgo biloba leaves which have been shown to naturally contain some of the highest levels of flavonoids in the world – without the use of extensive processing and concentrating. This should come as no surprise, as the trees are grown in New Zealand’s premier horticultural regions.

Furthermore, Nature Green, the company we purchase our Ginkgo from, acts as a revenue stream for a charitable trust. This trust provides employment opportunities for individuals who find it difficult to find work due to disabilities.

We are proud to produce this superior product made from locally grown herbs, knowing that we are also helping to make a difference in the community.
